André Wills, Managing Director

André Wills is the founder and managing director of Africa’s premier independent ICT market intelligence consultancy, Africa Analysis.

André was previously the Chief Telecoms Consultant and managing director of BMI-TechKnowledge Group, has fourteen years of telecommunications industry experience, eight of which were with BMI-TechKnowledge Group. In this role he has been responsible for directing telecommunications and broadcasting consulting projects, the development of telecommunications research methodologies and has conducted more than 100 syndicated and private client studies.

André has successfully completed many consulting assignments that span the whole ambit of the telecommunications sector including operator services, infrastructure suppliers, policy and regulation. In addition, André has conducted various convergence studies for both private clients and government departments.

André is highly regarded as a leading telecommunications sector analyst, industry spokesperson and consultant. His insights and analysis of leading trends and issues are highly valued. He is a sought-after speaker both for local and international conferences, client briefings and he is frequently quoted in the press.

Dobek Pater, Director

Dobek Pater currently works at Africa Analysis in the capacity of a Telecommunications and Market Analyst.

Dobek has participated in a numerous telecommunications projects, assessing both telecommunications markets and telecommunications technologies in various countries in Africa. Typical projects range from project design and research to researched-based analysis and consulting. Dobek has experience in servicing a diverse base of clients: operators, service providers, infrastructure suppliers, government departments and agencies, as well as market monitoring bodies, such as regulators.

Dobek was previously employed as a Senior Research Executive with Millward Brown South Africa, the South African office of a global market research company, specialising in marketing, branding, and the media industry. Prior to his involvement in the media market research, Dobek was Telecommunications Business Unit Manager at BMI-TechKnowledge Group, preceded by an office management position with a fibre optics cabling and systems integration company. The six years of immersion in the telecommunications industry have presented Dobek with an opportunity to learn about the subject from a technological as well as an analytical perspective, having played an active fibre optic product and services marketing role and performed numerous market and technology analyses. At BMI-TechKnowledge Group, Dobek was involved in developing the company’s capacity to work in Africa and on projects outside of South Africa. This work continues at Africa Analysis through the company’s continuous expansion into African markets.

As a telecommunications analyst, Dobek presents at numerous conferences and events, is frequently quoted in the press and industry literature, and is regularly interviewed by television and radio stations to provide insights into market developments.

Dobek achieved a Master of Arts in International Studies degree at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA in 1996 and a Master of Business Leadership at Unisa, South Africa in 2005.

Theo Scribante, Senior Consultant

Theo Scribante is a financial analyst with a focus on assignments in the telecoms industry and with considerable technical experience in the telecoms industry.

From 1997 to 2000 Theo worked as the IT & Electronics Investment Analyst at Investec Securities and was responsible for the financial analysis of large capitalisation companies listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) falling within a broad technology theme and maintaining current investment recommendations to large institutional investment clients with significant funds under management. As lead analyst he was responsible for other analysts in the technology, media and telecommunications (TMT team which, at various times, included a dedicated media sector analyst, a dedicated telecommunications sector analyst and a dedicated small capitalisation IT sector analyst.

Theo was ranked in sixth place overall by South African institutional fund managers in the 1998 annual Financial Mail survey of sell-side investment analysts, acted as sponsoring broker analyst for the then Comparex Ltd (currently BCX Ltd), Control Instruments Ltd, Set Point Technology Ltd and Siltek Ltd and participated in the listing of Valuecom Ltd on the Venture Capital board of the JSE. As part of his duties he provided ongoing ad-hoc technology company and technology sector consultancy to the Investec Corporate Finance and Private Equity divisions on a deal- or client-specific basis and rendered bespoke investment advice and client seminars for and on behalf of the Investec Private Bank and Private Stockbroker Clients divisions.

Theo was a member of the Alcatel Altech team established at the outset of the introduction of GSM in South Africa and had dealings with both Vodacom and MTN at the time. He was subsequently involved with the implementation of the first generation integrated client management and billing system for Telkom SA and the establishment of a support team responsible for the operational support of the first generation itemised billing CDR collection system for Telkom SA.

Theo completed a B.Sc in Electronic Engineering at the University Pretoria in 1978, an M.Eng in Electronic Engineering (with a telecommunications topic) at the University of Pretoria and an MBA at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1998 with a research report “The Relationship Between Quality Drivers and Business Results”.

Ian King, Analyst

Ian King currently works at Africa Analysis in the capacity of Analyst.

Ian qualified as a Chemical Engineer and worked for five years at Fedmis in Cape Town in a variety of chemical engineering roles. Whilst at BP, also in Cape Town, Ian completed the MBA on a part-time basis. During the four years Ian spent at BP, he was involved with refinery modelling including optimisation of supply/finished product on a quarterly basis.

Following a three year stint in the fruit packing and management consulting industries, Ian joined Foschini in a strategic planning role, initially at Head Office, subsequently in the IT division as a senior business analyst. After three years at Foschini, Ian relocated to Johannesburg to join Toyota as General Manager: Marketing Planning and Research. With a staff complement of 25, Ian’s functional responsibilities included marketing research and intelligence, (product, corporate and consumer), sales forecasting, pricing, business analysis, special product development and DTP of all technical information. After seven years at Toyota, Ian spent the following eight years in executive recruitment and market research before joining Africa Analysis in 2005.

Ian brings a diverse mix of skills developed across a wide variety of industries. He holds a B Sc in Chemical Engineering (1974), a Master of Business Administration (1981) and a B Com(Hons) in Information Systems (1988), all from the University of Cape Town.

David Moore, Analyst

David Moore currently works at Africa Analysis in the capacity of Analyst. His focus is the media industry.

David holds a B.Com Hons (Economics) from the University of Johannesburg, majoring in Trade and Investment.

During his studies David worked in the media industry for some five years gaining valuable insights into this industry.

In his youth David travelled extensively, having visited 25 countries on 5 continents. He has lived in such diverse countries as Bahrain, Hong Kong and The Gambia, before settling in South Africa. This exposed him to a wide variety of cultures and experiences.

Bongani Vilakazi, Market Researcher

Bongani has an IT Technical background and experience in Government Projects, Research, Business Plans and IT Training. He has experience in ICT, Broadcasting and Postal Services as a Task Team Leader. He has been involved in primary research in various telecommunications projects. Bongani has worked for the following companies, Bytes Technology Group on the Maluti FET Bonamelo Campus, Maluti FET College and a Bigen Africa joint venture with Maluti IT.

Bongani served the community and represented the Maluti FET College on local and national cluster meetings and further provided strategic support to various district municipalities national and provincial initiatives.

Anton Heÿdenrÿch

Anton Heÿdenrÿch has been actively involved in IT research and consulting for the past decade. During this time he has completed numerous assignments amongst others in the following areas: Internet, eCommerce (with an emphasis on financial services), systems, storage, data warehousing, SAP and the software market in the local IT industry. He has furthermore mentored a number of less experienced research analysts to become successful themselves. During this time Anton has also managed projects ranging from establishing ISO 9001 compliant quality management systems in large corporates to contributing on SAP implementation projects and has also been involved in strategic planning and culture and climate studies.

Before becoming involved in the IT industry, Anton was product manager and responsible for international marketing in Europe, the East and Australasia for a company supplying traffic engineering products. Responsibilities included identification, appointment, training and support of agents and managing one of the products. This followed a career as an electronics engineer on systems development projects where his role was initially technical and project management and later programme manager.

Anton is actively involved in local and small business organisations. He was a founding member of Cenbis (Centurion Business Support Centre) and has been actively involved in the local business forum since 1994, serving a term as chairperson and several terms as member of the management committee.

He holds a BSc (Eng)(Electronic) from the University of Pretoria and a MBL (cum laude) from the SBL (Unisa).

Eric M.K Osiakwan (ICT Consultant)

Eric Osiakwan is an Associate of Africa Analysis in the West Africa region. He is an analyst and an engineer. Based in Accra, Ghana, Eric is also a Senior Partner at Internet Research, leading that company’s research and consulting activities in Africa. He has extensive experience in assisting ISPs in market entry and establishment of niche market areas. He has successfully conducted numerous consulting assignments, including advising in the development and establishment of the BusyInternet brand and market – one of the biggest ISPs in Ghana.

Over the years, Eric has been conducting market research on the internet industry in Ghana and as well as other regions of Africa, some of which was published in the world renowned “Communication of Information System Journal” of ACM (together with the Mosaic Group).

Recently, Eric was selected as a visiting fellow and a research scholar to the Stanford University Digital Vision Fellowship Programme where he is leading “new thinking” on how the WorldBank should approach the development and deployment of “Open Access” in Africa’s fibre infrastructure build-out. Eric is currently advising the Open Society Institute for Africa (OSIWA, www.osiwa.org) on their ICT Programme for West Africa and also consulting with the Information for Development Programme (InfoDev, www.infodev.org) of the WorldBank on researching and developing new approaches to expanding the telecommunications markets in Africa through infrastructure expansion.

Through his involvement in Afrispa (the African ISP Association), Eric has assisted a number of African countries in establishing ISP peering points and continues to consult to them on a regular basis.

Previously, Eric worked as Chief Operations Officer of the Ghana New Ventures Competition (GNVC) where he started three businesses and trained 168 entrepreneurs with business plans and how to start their own business. Prior to that, he was Operations Manager of Novica.com and helped establish the Ghana section of that company’s global e-commerce marketing platform.

Peter Scott-Wilson, Market Research and Branding Specialist, Africa Analysis

Peter Scott-Wilson has over 20 years of marketing research experience in South Africa, including 8 years working in Africa. The majority of his marketing research experience was with Markinor where he was a director and shareholder. He has undertaken research for a wide cross-section of brands and companies in South Africa, applying different research methodologies.

In 1992 Markinor linked up with Walker Information based in the USA, a recognised leader in the field of Customer Satisfaction Measurement and Management, which included Employee Commitment Studies as well as assessments of the other key stakeholders. Peter managed this relationship and gained extensive knowledge in this area over a seven-year period. He oversaw more than 70 customer satisfaction studies in diverse fields. This experience and understanding of behavioural modelling has been applied and adapted to various markets across Africa with great success. It has also been used to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of company strategies and tactics.

Peter has developed a close working relationship with Africa Analysis extending back to when the company started operating. While not focussed on telecommunications and IT, he brings a different perspective when Africa Analysis designs their recommendations to meet client needs.

Geoffrey Daniell, Telecommunications Specialist, Africa Analysis

Geoff Daniell Pr. Eng., MBL, BSc. Eng (Elec) is a leading consultant in telecommunications, specialising in satellite communications systems. His main interest is in business plan development, the selection of appropriate technologies to match market needs and the design of total communication systems.

Geoff formed his own consulting company in 1998. The nature of the projects undertaken varies from in? depth research into satellite systems to the design of numerous corporate VSAT networks.

Geoff spent 28 years in Telkom SA Ltd, fulfilling a number of positions and completing his career in Telkom as General Manager International Networks in 1998. He has a broad experience in all aspects of telecommunications in South Africa, having worked on the design, implementation and operation of open wire, coaxial cable, microwave, optic fibre and digital transmission systems. Geoff has also designed and implemented fixed wireless access systems and GSM networks.

Geoff is the sub-Saharan correspondent for the Global VSAT Forum, a worldwide non-profit organisation representing the VSAT Industry. Geoff serves on the GVF's worldwide Regulatory Working Group and the newly formed GVF Technical Working Group.

Geoff has travelled extensively in Europe, the USA and Africa. He has visited and worked in all but 7 countries on the African continent.
